Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, when it was described as “an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization”. Since it was not plundered by the Spanish when they conquered the Incas, it is especially important as a cultural site and is considered a sacred place. It is also known as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.
